Three Sports Documentaries We Need In The Near Future

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

Diving into a good documentary can be extremly revealing. Us sports fans love them becasue they capture the human side of the athletes we idolize, or perhaps despise. Layers are pealed back and unseen situations are brought to the public eye, often for the first time.

As a viewer, the best documentaries are the ones that are authentic, the ones that explore the smaller details that make of the whole story. In order for this type of doc to be produced, the subject(s) has to one, have tremendous relevance and impact in their sport. Two, have enough interesting content documented about them over a exented period of time, and three, have other primary sources that provide additional side stories and perspectives to main story. The following are three concepts for documentaires highlightlighting the lives of recent sports icons (not ranked for order).

  1. Coach Mike Krzyzewski,

Long time Duke University head basketball coach, Mike Krzyewsk has had an enormous amount of success. His total of 1,170 career wins beats out Jim Boeheim's 982 total career wins for the most winning D1 coah of all time. GOAT!

Coach K has been blessed with the opportuity to coach some of the worlds best hoopers, not just on the college sceen, but the Olymics as well. Imagine the conversations that he had, speeches he has giving, the stories he's heard and witnessed. Those are the things we sports lovers want to see brought to screen!

Being the highly tauted blue blood school they are, Duke has the best rescources available, and rightfully so. With Coach K's fairwell tour coming up this 2021-22 season, along with potential top 3 draft pick Paulo Banchero, the Blue Devils are bound to have in depth camera exposure- and if they don't, why the hell not?

Hopefully their media team can capture those intimate moments between coach and players; the lagacy building moments that perhaps unfold behind the scenes. Dive deeper into Duke basketball, the true nature and character of Coach K's, the stories of the players he has impacted along the way.

2. Scottie Pippen

Chicago Bulls legend and former teammate of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen has definitely provided us with some eyebrow-raising quotes since the release of the Last Dance documentary. He's been quoted saying things such as, "Phil Jackson is a racist.," and even wrote, "I may go as far to say Mike ruined basketall," in his new memoir Ungaurded.

Pippen memoir seeks to relcaim the narrative of his career, and tell his side of the story, but what better way to do so than a documentary? His story often gets pushed to the back due to playing with personalities such as Michael Jordan and Denis Rodman, yet Pippen's backstory in no snooze.

You can tell that Pippen feels a bit slighted, maybe even bitter when discussing his career. There has be no shortage of confidence nor honesty when explaining his importance to the Bulls. On a site down interview with Micheal Strahan, Pippen acknowledges he wouldn't be where he is without Jordan, but says the same applies to MJ's career if they had not been teammates. There's so much to the game basketball that is behind the scences. The Bulls dynasty was so unique on and off the court, and Scottie Pippen just seems like the perfect personality to film a reviting documentary about.

3. Kobe Bryant

This one is rather self explanitory. Rest in peace Kobe Bean Bryant, a top 10 basketball player of all-time. Throughout his illustious career, Bryant captivated us fans with his high-flying posters and game winning shots that will stick in our forever. His impact off the court trancended basketball as well. His dedicaion to his craft, and relentless effort to get better is a trait admirable in any feild of work, and the Mamba was able to impact many people in doing so.

Kobe was a global phenomenon. There's been plenty of mini documentaries and specials on Kobe Bryant, but a recent one capturing his entire life, and impact after his tragic death is much anticipated. Highsnobsociety say, "turns out, Kobe Bryant had plans for a documentary of his final Lakers season, and the film is currently in development, according to Magic Johnson," so hopefully that still releases.

Johnson credited the Mamba for being smart enoguh to have cameras follow him around, so we should get exceptional behind the scene footage from that. Hopefully a documentary is in the makes and Vanessa Bryant is heavily involved in the process. Kobe Bryant will forever be a legend, and ledgends never die.
